Once you have completed your course, all individuals must apply to the government regulator for their state or territory. There is usually an application form to fill out, and you will be required to attach your real estate course certificate or statement of attainment.

As part of the Certificate IV in Real Estate Practice, you will learn about the regulators in each state and the educational requirements to apply for a real estate license.

As a student of Connect Skills Institute, we are happy to assist you in applying for your real estate license, on successful completion of your course.

For more information on eligibility and educational requirements see the following list of regulators for each state and territory:

New South Wales: NSW Fair Trading

Victoria: Consumer Affairs Victoria

Queensland: Office of Fair Trading (Queensland Government)

Western Australia: Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety – DMIRS  (Government of Western Australia)

South Australia: Consumer and Business Services (CBS) (Government of South Australia)

Australian Capital Territory: Access Canberra (ACT Government)

Northern Territory: Northern Territory Government

Tasmania: Property Agents Board Of Tasmania

There are many different training providers which students can choose from. There is no “best” per se, but there are better quality training providers than others.

Over the years, we have supported many students who have studied at other training organisations and had negative experiences.

Before enrolling into a real estate course, we recommend you:

  • Avoid judging all course offerings as the same. Just because they use the same code or name does not mean they are trained or delivered the same way. There can be a huge difference in the quality of training, teachers and learning materials. Poor training and materials can impact your ability to finish a course or learn and improve your skills and knowledge.
  • Investigate the level of support and learning experience offered by your training provider. If the course is online, ask your provider what study materials are included in the course. Are they interactive and online? Any training videos? Are the course assessments completed online in the browser, or do students need to print or fill out complicated pdf forms?
  • Make sure to ask your training provider how many questions are in their course. Each training provider will usually have different assessments, and the number of assessments can differ for the same course offering. Student assessment workloads can vary immensely from each training provider! With a long, overly complicated assessment, it may take you much longer to finish with one training provider than it does with another.
  • Look at the training providers’ online reviews (Google, Facebook, TrustPilot or ProductReviews etc.)
  • Avoid 1-day fast-tracked courses or 3-day workshops. These real estate course offerings are typically: a. not compliant with government standards. We don’t recommend that students risk their future careers or real estate license. Training regulators do conduct audits, and they can revoke certificates. b. not just one or three days. Usually, after listening to someone in a workshop, students will then go home, study learning material and do assessments in their own time.

Note that vocational real estate courses can only be fast-tracked via recognition of prior learning (RPL).

Accredited and nationally recognised real estate courses can cover a wide range of topics such as property law, economics, marketing, finance, and agency management.

In the Certificate IV in Real Estate Practice, you will learn the aspects and duties of real estate sales and property management- as well as real estate legislation, communication, property inspections and trust accounts.

Whether you’re looking to start a career in real estate or take your existing career to the next level, there’s a real estate course to suit your career needs.

Potential job roles include property sales, property management, agency management and auctioneering.

What is a real estate agent?

A real estate agent is someone licensed or certified by a regulator, the state government, to work in real estate. Real estate agents act on behalf of their clients in property transactions and have a duty of care to their clients.

Before you start any real estate course, you should make sure that:

  1. You enrol into the right course that suits your career goals.
  2. You understand the government regulators’ eligibility and educational requirements.
  3. You understand the eligibility requirements of your training provider.

It is not generally recommended to apply for jobs before you finish the required real estate course and register yourself with the government regulator (if required).

The reason is that if you do get a job opportunity and the employer wants you to start ASAP, you legally cannot. So in that kind of situation, the employer can easily change their mind, or they might find someone else to fulfil the role.

We recommend that once you have fulfilled the requirements of your state or territory regulator and are approved, start looking for work and applying for jobs.
