How Old Do You Have To Be To Get An RSA?

Dreaming of a career in hospitality?

If you’re under 18, you might be wondering if you can get an RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol) certificate early.

You can’t use your RSA to serve alcohol until you’re 18, but you can often complete the RSA training beforehand.
It is up to the training provider as to what the minimum age is they allow to deliver the training. Here at Connect Skills Institute we allow students that are 16 years and older.

This guide breaks down the age requirements for getting an RSA across Australia, so you can plan your path in this exciting field.

Know Your State’s Rules: Each state has different rules for who can get an RSA.

State-by-State Breakdown:

  • New South Wales (NSW): Training is recommended for 16+. Minors can’t serve alcohol without special permission.
  • Queensland (QLD): No minimum age for RSA, but minors can only serve alcohol in non-adult entertainment venues.
  • Victoria (VIC): Available to minors, but you must be 18 to serve.
  • Australian Capital Territory (ACT): No minimum age for training, but under 18s can only serve in non-adult-only areas.
  • Northern Territory (NT): Can complete RSA under 18, but the serving age is 16 years and 8 months (with special exceptions).
  • South Australia (SA): Training is recommended for 17+, and you can’t serve until 18.
  • Western Australia (WA): Minors can get an RSA, but need approval from the Director of Liquor Licensing to serve (minimum age 16+).

Why Get An RSA Under 18?

Even if you can’t serve yet, getting an RSA early:

  • Shows proactivity and initiative to potential employers.
  • Equips you with valuable knowledge about responsible alcohol service.
  • Gives you a head start when you turn 18.

Learning Made Easy: Many organisations offer flexible online RSA courses, perfect for busy schedules.

Renewing Your RSA: Don’t forget, RSA certificates require renewal (e.g., every five years in NSW).
